Welcome

The Texas House Democratic Campaign Committee
Building and Maintaining a Democratic Majority in the State House

Texas House Democrats now stand at 71 seats strong.

State Representative Dan Barrett's victory in the special election in Fort Worth over yet another Republican backed by the Republican Regime in Austin sent a resounding message across Texas -- we are now only 5 seats from becoming the majority in the Texas House.

With Rep. Dan Barrett's victory and Rep. Kirk England's decision to seek reelection as a Democrat, Texas House Democrats picked up two more seats in 2007 that were held by Republicans for decades, and we continue to grow and build towards a Democratic majority in the State House.

The Republican leadership in Austin with their claim of "absolute power" have no tolerance for the values and priorities of the hardworking families in our communities. House Democrats continue to fight for our public schools, fight for affordable health care and to fight for us on pocketbook issues. Standing up against the agenda of the Republican leadership and the strong arm tactics used in enforcing that agenda, we are proud to welcome Rep. England to our ranks.

The Texas House Democratic Campaign Committee is the central vehicle working to elect and re-elect strong Democrats to the Texas House. While there are dozens of Democratic groups and political action committees around the state, the HDCC is the only organization dedicated solely to building and maintaining a Democratic majority in the State House.

In 2006, the HDCC was the most successful Democratic political organization in Texas. Democrats began 2006 outnumbered 87-63 by Republicans in the House and faced the daunting task of re-electing 13 Democrats in Republican-leaning and toss-up districts. By the end of 2006, Democrats had successfully returned every vulnerable incumbent to the House and defeated 6 House Republicans, narrowing their margin to 81-69. By winning Rep. Barrett's special election and with Rep. England joining the Democrats to grow our number to 71, only 5 seats are needed for a Democratic majority in the State House.

House Democrats are now flexing their muscle on matters of vital public policy. Thanks to our new numerical strength and enhanced ability to build bipartisan coalitions to do what is right for Texas, House Democrats have led the fight for true Texas priorities during the 2007 legislative session. House Democrats successfully passed an across-the-board teacher pay raise which will allow Texas to recruit and retain the best and brightest young educators, required more record votes and improved public access to the legislative actions to open the doors of state government to the people of Texas. Leading the fight to fully restore the Children's Health Insurance Program (CHIP), Democrats won a first step -- restoring coverage for 100,000 of the more than 200,000 kids who Republicans cut from CHIP in 2003.

None of these successes would have been possible without the work of the HDCC in 2006. The HDCC’s 2006 success stories include:

  • Performing race-changing opposition research which pushed Democratic Reps. Joe Farias and Juan Garcia to victory in San Antonio and Corpus Christi;
  • Raising vitally important late financial contributions that allowed Reps. Joe Heflin and Valinda Bolton to overcome last minute Republican attacks in West Texas and Austin;
  • Recruiting and training top-notch campaign staff for Reps. Chuck Hopson and Jim McReynolds in East Texas; and
  • Paying for thousands of pieces of get-out-the-vote direct mail in key House districts to drive turnout of targeted voters.

The HDCC is already hard at work preparing for the 2008 election cycle. Your generous investment will help the HDCC recruit the best candidates and continue to build professional campaign operations, train campaign staff and provide winning research, messaging and communications tools. By investing today in a plan to target the right races with the right resources we will win back the Texas House.

Campaign central for Democrats in the Texas House, the HDCC is working to elect strong Democrats to the Texas House. The HDCC is the only organization in the state dedicated solely to winning back the Texas House. That narrow focus makes us an effective and efficient operation -- building and investing in order to win today and tomorrow.Together, we can build a better, stronger, more unified Democratic effort in Texas.

The political landscape in Texas has changed over the last decade, and we're working to secure the future of our great state. For Texas Democrats, the Legislature is "where the action is" -- and the Texas House needs strong Democrats to continue our fight to improve public schools, lower property taxes for all Texas families and bring integrity back to state government. The fight continues to fully restore CHIP, pass reals solutions for the 1.4 million uninsured children in Texas and improve opportunities for all Texans.
The HDCC is the only organization in the state dedicated solely to winning back the Texas House. That narrow focus makes us an effective and efficient operation -- building and investing in order to win today and tomorrow. Together, we can build a better, stronger, more unified Democratic effort in Texas.
